Arrest made, more expected in killing of Calgary chef

An arrest has been made and police say more are expected in the March killing of a Calgary chef, weeks before he could realize his dream of opening his own restaurant.

Christophe Herblin, 56, was killed after he responded to an alarm around 3 a.m. on March 14 outside Croque Saveurs, a French market and deli he was due to open the following month on Bow Trail S.W. at 37th Street.

Herblin worked as executive chef at Calgary's Glencoe Club for the past 12 years. 

Police said the man who was arrested Wednesday won't be named unless and until he was formally charged. As of Wednesday afternoon, he was being questioned at police headquarters.

Police said they expect to make additional arrests and lay more charges.

Police looking for 2 people

Police believe Herblin was attacked by thieves who were trying to break into a cannabis store through his soon-to-be-opened deli.

"This was a tragic, senseless event, and we continue to look for answers and seek justice for the Herblin family," said Staff Sgt. Martin Schiavetta with CPS homicide unit.

Police are still asking the public for any information connected to the case. 

Investigators are also hoping to track down Fritz Chiefmoon, 27, and Kiara Leather, 19, who are believed to have information connected to the killing.

Herblin had responded to a break-and-enter alarm at his business around 3 a.m. Police cleared the scene and searched the business before leaving.

Herblin died trying to get help

While he waited for his business to be secured after the break-in, Herblin remained in the parking lot until about 6 a.m.

Police say that's when at least three offenders returned and attacked the victim. 

Herblin managed to get to a nearby gas station but died at the scene before he could be taken to hospital.

There were at least two break-ins at the same Spiritleaf cannabis store and investigators are looking into potential connections.

Herblin left behind a wife and daughter.
