Calgary company to run Swan Hills treatment plant

The Alberta government has found a company to take over the controversial Swan Hills waste treatment plant.

Environment Minister Halvar Jonson announced Monday that Calgary based Sensor Environmental Services will run the hazardous waste treatment plant for the next year.

Sensor will take over over from the previous operator, Bovar on December 31st. The province will then have until January 1, 2002 to find a permanent buyer.

Bovar announced last October that it would stop operating the Swan Hills plant at the end of this year because it was losing money.

Since then, the province has been looking for a permanent buyer, but so far there have been no takers.

Alberta has spent more than $400 million on the plant since it opened in 1987. It will cost the province another $24 million to have Sensor operate the facility for the next year.
