A woman has died after being shot in a targeted attack in East Vancouver on Tuesday afternoon, police have confirmed.

Vancouver resident Janice Nicole Bryant, 33, was shot just after 5 p.m. near East 7th Avenue and St. Catherines Street.

When police arrived, they found her suffering from gunshot wounds. She was taken to hospital in serious condition and died shortly afterwards, said police.

"This appears to be a targeted shooting. No arrests have been made," said media relations officer Jason Doucette in a statement on Tuesday evening.

Neighbour tried to help

James Kuhleitner had been out on his deck when it happened and ran over to help.

"There was a man holding, I think it was his wife, because I could hear him screaming that he didn't want to let her go," he said.

"A couple of us told him just to keep talking to her, to try to keep her aware of things."

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call 911, or if they wish to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

The death is Vancouver's eighth homicide of 2017 according to police.
