RCMP investigating homicide of youth in Terrace, B.C.

Police have confirmed they are looking into the homicide of a youth in Terrace, B.C.

RCMP said in a statement Monday that they were called to the 3000-block of Clinton Street in the northwestern B.C. city on Sunday.

Officers found a youth who was dead, as well as another young person who had to be hospitalized with serious injuries.

"One youth was arrested in connection with this investigation and has been released from custody," read an RCMP statement. "No charges have been approved by B.C. Prosecution Services at this time."

Police say they are not releasing any further information as they look to advance their investigation. They said they believed there was no ongoing threat to the community.

The Coast Mountains School District confirmed to CBC News that the dead youth attended one of its schools.

The district posted a message on its website with suggestions for parents and caregivers to support their children dealing with grief.

Liimiiuum Halya'at (Robert Clifton), director of Indigenous education for the district, said that culturally-appropriate supports were being provided to students.

"Almost half of the learners in Coast Mountains School District are Indigenous," he said. "We are learning on the unceded lands of the Gitxsan, Haisla and Tsimshian peoples."

The school district has an enrolment of around 4,200 students spread across Terrace, Hazelton, New Hazelton, Kitimat, Kitwanga and Stewart. Terrace is one of the largest cities in northwestern B.C., with a population of around 12,000 people.
