Four power poles carrying a 60-kilovolt transmission line have been cut down in the Green Timbers area of Surrey and BC Hydro says a chainsaw was used to do it.

"Obviously this is extremely concerning to us as it is a dangerous act of vandalism," BC Hydro spokeswoman Mora Scott said. "This had the potential to severely injure or kill a member of the public or one of our crews."

It happened around 1 a.m. PT on Wednesday and resulted in 6,000 customers losing power.

"Our crews were able to switch customers early this morning to a different distribution line, which was able to restore their power around 4 a.m.," Scott said.

This isn't something Hydro has seen much of.

"From time to time we do see our equipment vandalized but like I mentioned this is obviously really concerning to us.  We do work really hard to educate the public on the dangers of electricity."

BC Hydro is working with the RCMP to try to determine who is responsible.

RCMP are looking into who may have cut down the power poles in Surrey. Hydro says customers went without power and lives were potentially endangered.
