Equinox Gallery exhibit looks at changing storefronts
Photo exhibit looks at displays from French corsets in 1910 to contemporary Chicago
Storefronts may be called the art of everyday, but a new exhibit at Vancouver's Equinox Gallery is much more than that.
Pictured Windows tells the history of the humble shop window display in over 100 photos from cities like Chicago, Paris, London, New York, Montreal and Vancouver.
"It's the interchange that the merchant has to seduce the consumer or the viewer to make an entrance," says Equinox Gallery owner and director Andy Sylvester.
The photographs start in 1910 in Paris and end with more contemporary images, including the work of renowned Vancouver photographer Fred Herzog.
Sylvester says the photos examine storefronts as a still life art display.
"The storefront can set up a narrative that may sit into the viewers mind that has potentiality for the future for consumption and for visual delight," says Sylvester.
The nonsensical juxtaposition of items like taxidermy and posters of the band Kiss give some of the storefronts what Sylvester calls a surreal tone.
The exhibit opens on March 28 and runs until May 2, 2015 at the Equinox Gallery, 525 Great Northern Way.
