The Ancient Forest/Chun T'oh Whudujut hiking trail between Prince George and McBride will be closed for upgrades for most of September.

The popular trail is located in a unique inland rainforest that is home to some of the largest old-growth cedar stands in the province.

In March, the province announced it would be turning the land, previously maintained by volunteers, into a class A provincial park.

The province has also said it will consider nominating the park for a UNESCO World Heritage Site designation.

From September 6 through September 22, the park will be closed on weekdays for upgrades to the parking lot and the highway leading to the hiking trail, approximately113 kilometres east of Prince George.

The million-dollar upgrade is expected to be completed, September 30.
