Watch Joni Mitchell win a Grammy Award and perform 'Both Sides, Now'
Mitchell shared the stage with Brandi Carlile, Allison Russell, Lucius, Blake Mills and Jacob Collier
It was a big night for Joni Mitchell at the 66th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday. The legendary Canadian artist first took home the award for best folk album for her 2023 release Joni Mitchell at Newport, a live recording of her 2022 Newport Folk Festival appearance.
Mitchell accepted the honour at the pre-telecast ceremony, walking onstage with friend and musician, Brandi Carlile. "I don't know what to say about this," Mitchell said, after an initial thank you. "We had so much fun at that concert, and I think you can feel it on the record. It's a very joyous record because of the people that I played with and the spirit of the occasion was very high."
This marked Mitchell's 10th Grammy win. In 1969, she won her first Grammy when her second album, Clouds, took home best folk performance. In 2002, she was given the lifetime achievement award.
Later in the evening, Mitchell gave her first-ever Grammys performance. Seated in a chair while holding onto her cane, Mitchell sang a moving rendition of her 1969 song "Both Sides, Now." She was accompanied onstage by a cast of musicians including Brandi Carlile, Lucius, Blake Mills, Jacob Collier and fellow Canadian and 2024 Grammy winner, Allison Russell.
In her introduction to the performance, Carlile described Mitchell as "the matriarch of imagination, a true Renaissance woman, my hero and yours."
