On Sept. 28, rock icons Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds will release Distant Sky: Live in Copenhagen, an EP featuring four brand new live recordings from their 2017 world tour stop in Denmark.

Today, CBC Music has the exclusive live video premiere of Cave performing "The Mercy Seat," a brooding track about the electric chair, originally off his 1988 album Tender Prey. Onstage in Copenhagen, Cave teases out the five-minute song while a stadium's worth of cult-like devotees hang off his every word.

"The Mercy Seat" went on to be covered by Johnny Cash on his 2000 album American III: Solitary Man. Cave commented on this career high to The Guardian in 2006, remarking that, "It doesn't matter what anyone says. Johnny Cash recorded my song."

A famously intense performer, Cave has honed his live prowess over four decades of touring his 16 studio albums. Currently, the Australian artist and his band are headlining festivals across Europe, before making their way to Latin and North America, where they'll play one Canadian show at Toronto's Scotiabank Arena on Oct. 28.

Available on digital and 12" vinyl, Distant Sky: Live in Copenhagen includes live cuts of "Jubilee Street," "Distant Sky," "From Her to Eternity" and "The Mercy Seat."
