Junos 365 sessions: the Reklaws cover '1234'
The country duo take on Feist's biggest hit.
As part of our coverage of the 2019 Juno Awards, we're inviting some of today's hottest Canadian acts to cover a past winner in the single of the year category.
Of all the songs that brother-sister country duo the Reklaws could've chosen from for this session, they agreed that Feist's "1234" seemed to fit best with their own sound.
"Because it's almost folky, the whole sound of it, so it was easy to make it countrified," explained one-half of the duo, Jenna Walker.
Brother Stuart Walker remembers hearing "1234," which won the Juno for single of the year in 2008, for the first time as many people might've encountered it — on an Apple commercial. He recalled being "psyched" to hear the song, adding, "I like to imagine when they wrote that song that it's like, you're starting the song off by counting yourself in."
The Walker siblings admitted that there were some difficulties covering the song. "It was hard to find the right key because I have a very low voice and Jenna has a high female voice so we had to find the right key to make it a duet," Stuart said. "But it was a cool experience."
The end result is a duet that stays fairly faithful to the original, with the addition of a second voice making for a nice harmonic breakdown near the end of the track, achieving the "good vibe" that Stuart said he gets from hearing Feist's version.
