Junos 365 session: Watch The Dead South transform The Beaches' 'Money'

In the latest Junos 365 London session, a 2018 breakthrough group nominee covers the band that ultimately took home the award in that category.

The Dead South performs a cover of "Money" by The Beaches.

CBC Music's Junos 365 London sessions continue today with an act who scored its first two Juno Award nominations just last year. Saskatchewan bluegrass band the Dead South took home the award for traditional roots album for their record, Illusion & Doubt, but lost their second award of the evening, breakthrough group of the year, to Toronto band, The Beaches.

When looking through the list of songs they could cover from previous winners, the members of the Dead South wanted to pay tribute to the band who went home with that second award, landing on The Beaches' 2017 single, "Money." And the result is a completely transformed version of the song, from rock anthem to fun and speedy folk jam.

Below, members Nate Hilts and Danny Kenyon explain their decision to choose The Beaches' "Money," and how they went about adding their own "flavour" to the cover.

Why did you choose to cover this song?

Nate Hilts: We were given the option of choosing past breakthrough group of the year winners and came across The Beaches, and we thought, why not cover four badass girls?

How did you approach covering this song?

Hilts: We'd talked about that before — do you do it exactly as it is or do you try to make it your own? I don't know, we just kind of do what happens naturally. Not too much thought process goes into it. Everyone just kind of finds their roles.

Danny Kenyon: We kind of started by learning the song how it was, and as we learned it, we sort of just added our own flavour to it. That's quite a different song for us to do and it's a lot of fun. It was a lot of fun to add harmonies to it so, on top of what they were doing, to add our own stuff to it.
