Newfoundland's Holy Heart Choir gets documentary treatment
Holy Heart Chamber Choir won in the 2020 and 2019 Canadian Music Class Challenge
A short documentary by a global learning organization has been created about Holy Heart Chamber Choir in St. John's, and their winning entry in the 2020 Canadian Music Class Challenge.
Under the direction of choral director and music teacher Robert Colbourne, the choir won first place in our challenge in the category of best auditioned music class for their stirring performance of "Sing You Home" by Newfoundland's own (and Holy Heart alumni) the Ennis Sisters. They wanted to include French, English and sign language, so the choir translated part of the song into French and reached out to the Newfoundland Deaf Choir who provided support, mentorship and education in this inclusive and award-winning collaboration. The video was created in accordance to the public health guidelines for singing in Newfoundland and Labrador at the time of recording.

The entry not only won a top prize in our contest, but has so far received more than 56,000 views on YouTube. It caught the eye of Dr. Michael Fullen, the renowned author, educator, and global leadership director for New Pedagogies for Deep Learning. Dr. Fullen approached the school about creating a documentary to tell the story of the collaborative musical experience.
The documentary was recently released and you can watch it below.
For winning the 2020 Canadian Music Class Challenge, Holy Heart Chamber Choir received $1000.00 in new musical instruments or equipment, and a plaque. They also won first place in the senior vocal category in 2019. Find out more about the Canadian Music Class Challenge here.
