The 2024 CBC Music Playlist Challenge #BlackMusicMatters celebrates Canadian hip-hop
Create a playlist during Black History Month for a chance to win a virtual concert for your class
To celebrate Black History Month, the 2024 CBC Music Playlist Challenge is spotlighting Canadian hip-hop music and social justice. This year, teachers and students are invited to create a playlist with their favourite Black Canadian musicians for a chance to win a virtual concert with Chad Price.
Using Darren Hamilton and Jon Corbin's #BlackMusicMatters: Hip-Hop and Social Justice in Canada lesson plan, teachers can educate students in grades 7-12 about Black history, culture, innovation and social justice in the context of Canadian hip-hop music. Musicians featured in the lessons include Shad, Michie Mee, Maestro Fresh Wes, Haviah Mighty and more.
Students can then create a 15-song YouTube playlist with their favourite Black Canadian musicians to celebrate Black music in the classroom. Teachers will submit the playlist to CBC Music's draw, and the winning class will get a concert.
The contest opens Monday, Feb. 5, 2024, at 9 a.m. ET and closes Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at 3 p.m. ET.
