Many municipal services in Sault Ste. Marie were closed Friday due to a significant winter storm.
In a news release, the city says it received 50 centimetres of snow overnight Friday and expects another 30 centimetres to come.
The city cancelled transit services, garbage and recycling pickup for the day, and the landfill is closed.
Community centres are also closed until further notice.
"Motorists should drive according to the road conditions and maintain a safe distance for heavy equipment operators to clear and sand roadways safely and efficiently," the city said in a news release.
Officials add the public works department continues to deploy all available crews for snow clearing to keep up with the storm.
It says arterial and collector roads are being prioritized, followed by residential streets.
Algoma University cancelled all classes and campus activities today, and Algoma Public Health also closed, and the Sault Area Hospital has had to cancel and reschedule all elective surgeries.
Even the local OHL team, the Soo Greyhounds, has their Friday night game cancelled by the league.
Dan Perri, the city's director of public works, told CBC News, said the muncipality will make a decision on Saturday morning as to what it can reopen.
"We are still currently in a significant weather event," Perri said.
Steven Flisfeder, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, said the city can expect 30 to 60 additional centimetres of snow by the time the storm ends.
"Some areas, by the end of the event, could see upwards of 75, 100 centimetres of snow total through this event," he said.
