Owners will be notified to bring their cars to Hyundai dealer for replacement camera
Hyundai is recalling 48,509 SUVs and small cars in Canada, plus an additional 226,000 in the U.S., because the rear-view camera image may not show up on the screens.
The recall covers certain Santa Fe and Elantra vehicles from the 2021 and 2022 model years. There are no confirmed crashes or injuries related to the recall, a Hyundai Canada spokesperson told CBC News.
The rear-view camera's printed circuit boards, which form the base of an electrical circuit, were "produced with insufficient solder joints," the spokesperson said.
"All owners of the subject vehicles will be notified with instructions to bring their vehicles to a Hyundai dealer for replacement of the rear-view camera."
Hyundai says in documents posted Wednesday by U.S. safety regulators that solder joints on a printed circuit board can develop cracks that can worsen over time and cause the cameras to fail. That can reduce visibility and increase the risk of injury to pedestrians.
As a result, the affected vehicles don't meet Canadian motor vehicle safety standards, either.
Dealers will replace the cameras at no cost to owners. Drivers can input their vehicle identification number, or VIN, into recalls.hyundaicanada.com, which will tell them if their vehicle is part of the recall.
