Entry in five-ish words

"Walk from war to peace."

The story's source of inspiration

"The pandemic! I started writing this story around the beginning of the pandemic and in the summer of 2021, I felt proud of what I wrote. So I started researching how to publish or how to get my work out there. That is when I stumbled upon the CBC Short Story Prize and decided to send in my work!"

First lines

August 2010 — That is when the Canadian authorities intercepted MV Sun Sea, a cargo ship, off the coast of British Columbia carrying 492 Tamil refugees fleeing a civil war. The desperate voyage of people trying to scatter around the globe seeking asylum.
The boat people and their desperate, desperate journey toward freedom.
She sits cross legged on her sofa, lazily watching CP24 talking about the boat people and their plight. Her people and their plight. Her swollen pregnant belly sticking out uncomfortably.
