The Canada Reads 2023 books touch on difficult topics, which may come up in the debates.
Topics covered may include trauma, racism, war, colonial violence, the climate crisis and more.

Child neglect and abuse

Sexual assault and abuse

War violence and support for refugees
If you are fleeing violence or war, you can contact the Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture by calling 1-416-363-1066.

If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction or substance abuse, you can call Wellness Together Canada at 1-866-585-0445 or text WELLNESS to 741741. You can also find local support services at this website.

Indigenous mental health
The Hope for Wellness Help Line offers immediate help to all Indigenous peoples across Canada. It is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to offer immediate support and crisis intervention.
Call the toll-free Help Line at 1-855-242-3310 or connect to the online chat at www.hopeforwellness.ca.
When you access the Hope for Wellness Help Line online service you will access anonymous chat support services on a website hosted by the same Indigenous service provider that operates the Hope for Wellness Help Line.
Experienced and culturally competent Help Line counsellors can help if you:
- want to talk
- are distressed
- have strong emotional reactions
- may be triggered by painful memories
If asked, counsellors can work with you to find other wellness supports that are accessible near you. Telephone and online chat support is available in English and French. On request, telephone support is also available in:
- Cree
- Ojibway
- Inuktitut
Suicidal ideation
If you're worried someone you know may be at risk of suicide, you should talk to them about it, says the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention.
Support is available for those with thoughts of suicide. You can call the Canada Suicide Prevention Service 1-833-456-4566 or text 45645 or find a 24-hour crisis centre near you at suicideprevention.ca.
