Zoon is the musical project of Daniel Monkman, a pioneer of a new style of music he calls "moccasin gaze."
Based in Hamilton, Ont., he melds sounds from his Ojibway heritage with swirling layers of distorted guitars. The dreamy, psychedelic sounds are reminiscent of shoegaze legends My Bloody Valentine.
Monkman's teenage years were difficult. He battled racism and fought drug and alcohol addiction. And then he began a healing journey, overcoming many obstacles, and says music helped save his life. Monkman went on to record his latest album, Bleached Wavves, which came out this past summer.
In this episode of CBC Music's The Intro, Zoon performs "Vibrant Colours" and "Help me Understand," and chats with CBC Music Mornings' host Saroja Coelho. Watch it above.
Also joining Monkman in the band are: Daniel Wintermans on guitar, Drew Rutty on bass and Andrew Mcleod on vocals and percussion.
