Residents and workers at long-term care homes for seniors are among the most vulnerable people in Canada during&nbsp;the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attributed a surge in deaths to unexpected outbreaks in several long-term care facilities, he said Thursday.

According to&nbsp;Canada's Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam, nearly half of the country's 1,506 COVID-19 deaths are linked to these homes.

As Toronto monitors outbreaks of COVID-19 at three long-term care homes across the city, an advocate for seniors has told CBC News she is worried that these facilities could be "devastated" if the pandemic drags on for an extended period.

Advocate for older Canadians Laura Tamblyn Watts calls the attack a "failure of the entire system." She believes more resources are needed so that vulnerable people are not seated beside someone who could be dangerous.

As COVID-19 deaths mount in long-term care homes, families demand more timely information

People with family members in some Ontario long-term care homes are frightened, and they're demanding answers over unclear communication about the spread of COVID-19 infections in these facilities.

At the Eatonville Care Centre in Toronto, 31 residents with confirmed cases of COVID-19 have died, more than any other long-term care home in the province. Toronto Public Health reports 111 confirmed cases associated with the home.

Last week, the federal government was projecting up to 700 deaths by Apr. 16. The total is now more than 1,200.
