Essex County Warden Gary McNamara declared a state of emergency Sunday afternoon in response&nbsp;to COVID-19 at the Essex County Civic Centre.

He urged local residents to stay at home, even those who are healthy, for an indefinite period of time to protect those who are most vulnerable to the virus, such as seniors.

Windsor-Essex food banks only have 10 days of supplies left

The head of the Windsor-Essex Food Bank Association (WEFBA) is calling on residents to donate food, cash and even gift cards, as the region's food banks steadily run out of supply during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The Greater Vancouver Food Bank distributes 85,000 pounds of food every week to people in need.

The Windsor-Essex County Medical Health Units said it is working with the medical officer for Detroit Public Health to do contact tracing and manage the man's case.

Dr. Wajid Ahmed, chief medical health officer for Windsor-Essex County confirmed the second case of COVID-19 in the area Saturday afternoon. 

He said it was a "coordinated regional response" and stressed the seriousness of the COVID-19 pandemic.

McNamara also urged that returning travellers must self-isolate for two weeks to prevent the spread of the virus.

The announcement comes days after the City of Windsor declared a state of emergency on Friday.
