In the sixth and final Canadian political leadership profile, Jayme Poisson speaks to the CBC's Jonathan Montpetit about Maxime Bernier, the controversial head of the People's Party of Canada.
Bernier has gone from a Conservative cabinet minister, to a backbencher, to a Tory leadership front-runner, to the creator of a new party. He will be facing off against the other leaders next Monday in the English language leaders' debate, though many don't want him on the stage because of his positions and statements on Twitter.
While he is unlikely to lead this country, his party could be a factor in the election, playing spoiler to the Conservatives.
"Just to give you a sense of how close it is, last time around, Maxime Bernier did not bother putting up one poster in [his riding]," says Monpetit. "But this time, every lamppost, every telephone poll has a poster of Maxime Bernier on it. It really speaks to how close this race is."
