Casey Plett's Little Fish has won the 2019 Firecracker Award, marking yet another literary accomplishment for the Windsor, Ont. author's debut novel.

In recent weeks, Plett has won the $60,000 Amazon Canada First Novel Award and a Lambda Literary Award for her book, on top of being a finalist for the Dayne Ogilvie Prize.

Plett won the fiction category of the Firecracker Award, which annually celebrates books published by independent presses.

Little Fish is the story of a 30-year-old transgender woman named Wendy, who reflects on her life as an surprising family secret emerges.

"In Little Fish, Casey Plett brings us fully into the world of her characters and lets us feel the fateful inevitability of their choices," said the Firecracker Award judges in a press release.

"Plett's protagonist, Wendy, is searching for a hidden trans lineage in her own family tree. This heroic quest is at once deeply private and an enormously helpful way to think about what it means for any of us to come of age and become heroes of our own lives."

Plett previously published an award-winning short story collection called A Safe Girl to Love. She is also the publicist for the independent press Biblioasis.

The Firecracker Award's creative nonfiction prize went to Alabama author Shaelyn Smith for The Leftovers and its poetry prize was awarded to Los Angeles writer Sesshu Foster for City of the Future.
