As the year draws to a close, CBC Books(external link) is asking Canadian writers for their favourite books of 2018. Barbara Reid is the author of the children's book Picture the Sky, a finalist for the TD Canadian Children's Literature Award and winner of the CBC's Fan Choice Contest.
Reid recommends reading Warlight by Michael Ondaatje.
"Warlight had me from the first sentence: 'In 1945 our parents went away and left us in the care of two men who may have been criminals.' This is the kind of story that made me an avid reader as a child. The writing is so beautiful that it connects directly to the brain and imagination; I was able to enter another world from the get go. I read a lot of nonfiction and loved learning about the shadowy post WWII London setting of Warlight as much as I enjoyed trying to unravel the mysterious plot and following the fascinating characters. It was one of those books I avoided finishing because I didn't want the spell to break."
