As the year draws to a close, CBC Books(external link) is asking Canadian writers to share their favourite books of 2018. Monique Gray Smith is the author of Speaking Our Truth, a book that seeks to inform young Canadians of the legacy of the residential school system in Canada. It was a finalist for the 2018 TD Canadian Children's Literature Award.
Smith recommends reading Jonny Appleseed by Joshua Whitehead.
"It's been an exceptional year, but my favourite title is Jonny Appleseed by Joshua Whitehead. I was gripped by both Joshua's writing style and the story from the first page! I tried a few times to put it down and do other things, but his unique voice and the powerful way he reflected the lived experiences of the characters had me needing to know what was going to happen next. This is an exquisite contribution to literature and I hope I have the privilege to read more of Joshua's work in the near future!"
