Anne Hébert was a poet, playwright and novelist. She was a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1968. She died in January 2000.
Hébert debuted in 1942 with a poetry collection entitled Les Songes en équilibre. She then published her first novel Les Chambres de bois in 1958. Her 1960 collection Poèmes won the Governor General's Literary Award. Les Enfants du sabbat received the 1975 Governor General's Literary Award. In 1992, she won her third Governor General's Literary Award for L'enfant chargé de songes. Her novel Est-ce que je te derange?, which was translated into English by Sheila Fischman as Am I disturbing you?, was shortlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize 1999. Her other works include Kamouraska, Les Fous de Bassan and Heloise.
