A former Calgary phys ed teacher has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a teenage student.
Edwin Cay Arias, 46, worked at Bishop McNally High School when he began a two-year relationship in 2007 with student, which began when she was 16.
The two "engaged in numerous sex acts," including intercourse and oral sex, according to prosecutor Todd Buziak and defence lawyer Tonii Roulston who briefly outlined the crime.
Provincial court Judge Anne Brown accepted Arias's plea Friday afternoon.
The police investigation began in January 2017. Arias was arrested and charged in May.
At the time of Arias's arrest, police said the incidents took place at several Calgary homes, as well as at the school.
Police note that while the age of consent at the time was 14, the sexual relationship was illegal because of Arias was in a position of trust.
After the guilty plea, the case was adjourned to November for a pre-sentence report and forensic psychological assessment.
Neither Crown nor defence has indicated what they will seek for a sentence.
