What would children's writer Ruby Slipperjack tell her younger self?

Ruby Slipperjack is an Ojibwe professor, painter and writer from Whitewater Lake, Ont. Her latest novel, Dear Canada: These Are My Words, is inspired by her own experience in residential schools. Slipperjack is the 2017 recipient of the $25,000 Writers' Trust Vicky Metcalf Award for Literature for Young People, which recognizes the body of work of a writer of works for children or young adults in Canada.
CBC Books caught up with Slipperjack and asked her four questions about the writing life.
What would you tell your younger self?
"Don't be afraid to do what you would like to do for yourself."
What book would you recommend to aspiring writers?
"I like historical books and I do not have one special book in particular."
What is the best writing advice you've ever received?
"Write about what you know."
What's next for you?
"I am working on my next novel."
