Phillips accused of fatally shooting 63-year-old Larry Wellman at Captain's Quarters Hotel in 2015
Jury selection is moving along for the first-degree murder trial of Brandon Phillips at Newfoundland and Labrador's Supreme Court in St. John's.
As of around 11 a.m. Wednesday, six men and five women had been chosen. One more juror and two alternates are still needed. It is the third day of jury selection.
Phillips was charged after the fatal shooting of 63-year-old Larry Wellman at the Captain's Quarters Hotel in St. John's on Oct. 3, 2015.
Lawyers are using challenge for cause — a jury selection process used in high-profile cases.
Two people from the potential jury pool are selected as "triers." Their job is to determine if other prospective jurors would be suitable based on answers to questions, which are covered by a publication ban.
Then, lawyers for both sides can eliminate potential jurors until they're satisfied they have 12 jurors and two alternates who they believe will be fair and unbiased.
CBC will have more coverage throughout the day and you can follow the latest from the trial on our live blog.
