Entry in five-ish words

Childhood intuitions — love, loneliness, sex?

The poem's source of inspiration

"The charcoal sketch that hung in my childhood home and discussions had with it pertaining to the fragility of childhood and confusions between parental and sexual love."

First lines

seen upside down from the foot of the bed
Daddy reads aloud.
Beckett comes from Northern Ireland like us
barbed wire and lines
but Beckett lives in France now. We in East York.
"No one buys you a drink here."
