Voice in the Wild: A Memoir

After plans to live in Africa shatter, young journalist Laurie Sarkadi moves to the Subarctic city of Yellowknife seeking wilderness and adventure. She covers the changing socio-political worlds of Dene and Inuit in the late 1980s — catching glimpses of their ancient, animal-dependent ways — before settling into her own off-grid existence in the boreal forest. There, she experiences motherhood and its remarkable synchronicities with the lives of bears, caribou and other creatures. As a mother, and as a journalist, Sarkadi speaks up for abused women and children, creating controversies that entangle her in legal battles. When she looks to animals and the natural world for solace, she encounters magic. This evocative and exquisitely written memoir explores a more than two-decade long physical and spiritual journey into the wild spaces of northern Canada, around the globe and deep within. From the book

A mother black bear is visiting our house. I've awaited her return for four years. Her young ones are with her: two. My three sons, and Francois, are with me.
We watch through the big square window in our kitchen. She sniffs the air before rising onto her hind feet to walk towards me. For a moment we stand face to face, staring through the glass into one another's eyes. I know I've been given a powerful message, the breadth of which I will decipher later. But one thing feels certain. I am safe again.
