Toronto-based author Olive Senior has won the 2016 OCM Bocas Prize in the fiction category for The Pain Tree, beating out fellow Canadian and Scotiabank Giller Prize winner André Alexis, who was also a Bocas Prize finalist for Fifteen Dogs.

The OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature celebrates authors born in the Caribbean or holding Caribbean citizenship. The winners of the three categories - fiction, nonfiction and poetry - will now compete for the overall title, which comes with an award of $13,337 ($10,000 US) prize, sponsored by One Caribbean Media. The other two receive an award of $4,001.10 ($3,000 US).

New York-based writer Jacqueline Bishop won the nonfiction category for The Gymnast and Other Positions. Canadian author Austin Clarke's memoir 'Membering was a finalist in this category.

Tiphanie Yanique, also based in New York, won the poetry category for her collection Wife.

The winner of the overall prize will be announced on April 30.
