June is Indigenous Book Club Month. CBC Books will publish a recommendation each day from an Indigenous writer for a book written by another Indigenous author.
Francine Cunningham recommends Shadows Cast by Stars by Catherine Knutsson.
"Shadows Cast by Stars by Catherine Knutsson is a thrilling young adult dystopian novel that explores the ideas behind blood quantum, Métis identity and the future of our planet where the supernatural come out to play. This story is set mainly on Vancouver Island and looks at a world in which Indigenous blood is the cure for the disease that has ravaged the planet. Filled with stories of first love, bravery and a fight for survival, this book will give you the chills, have your blood pumping and leave you on the edge as you wait to read book two. This is a great book to put on a high school reading list as it introduces the concept of blood quantum, Indigenous identity and explores traditional Coast Salish supernatural figures."
Francine Cunningham is an Indigenous writer, artist and educator whose writing has appeared in several literary magazines, including the Malahat Review, the Puritan and the Maynard.
