The Bank of Canada just leveled up its gamer cred. To promote the release of the new $10 bill, they hid a special treat on the interactive site(external link) promoting the launch.
By typing in the iconic Konami code — up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, b, a — site goers are rewarded with a fanfare of "O Canada" accompanied with a storm of mini $10 bills. You can try it here(external link); it is surprisingly satisfying. (Or scroll to the bottom to see it in GIF form.)
For the non-gamers out there, the Konami code is a cheat featured in many classic Nintendo titles released by the Japanese game company Konami in the 1980s. Since then, the code has popped up throughout pop culture, cleverly planted in countless video games, television shows and websites.
"The Bank of Canada's web team thought the Konami code was a fun way to celebrate Canada's 150th anniversary of Confederation,'' says Bank of Canada spokeswoman Josianne Menard.
Going by social media's reaction, they seem to have hit the mark.
