Childhood tells the story of Thomas MacMillan, a young boy growing up in the 1960s in southern Ontario and being raised by his Trinidadian grandmother. When Thomas turns 10, his mother returns to take him back to Ottawa. There he begins to wonder about his father, and sets out on a quest to find some answers.

From the book
It has been six months since my mother died; a shade less since Henry passed. In that time, I've stayed home and I've kept things tidy.
They have been much on my mind.
I've been thinking about Love, you see, and theirs was the first and most puzzling romance I witnessed. I didn't understand it at the time. I still find it odd, though now it also seems like a sad thing to contemplate.
