Shin-chi is six years old and is about to go a new school — the residential school his sister already attends. As they travel to the school together, Shin-chi's sister tells him about all the things they must remember about their home. Shin-chi keeps those memories close as he spends the year at school, lonely and working hard.

Shin-chi's Canoe won the TD Canadian Children's Literature Award in 2009.

Nicola I. Campbell is an author of Nłeʔkepmx, Syilx and Métis descent, from British Columbia. Her stories weave cultural and land-based teachings that focus on respect, endurance, healing and reciprocity.
