Michael and his little brother Brent get uprooted from their tight-knit Newfoundland community after their parents are killed in a car accident. The brothers are separated as Michael moves to a larger city to live with his Aunt Ellen and his strict Uncle Ted. He develops a close friendship with his cousin Curtis, but struggles with grief, bullying at school and accepting his new environment. He eventually flees into the woodlands with Curtis in tow in search of freedom and escape.
Hold Fast is for readers ages 13 and up.
From the book
And what about me? The other one. The one who is not going to ask. Where does he fit into all this? I was waiting. Feeling stupid, because I didn't want to look like I was waiting.
"Mike, too?" Brent said then.
Nobody answered. Until Aunt Ellen spoke up, all full of life but not laying her eyes on me at all. "Michael is going to come to live with us in St. Albert."
So that was it. That was what they had in their minds. St. Albert. The least she could a done was look at me when she said it.
