It's the summer of 1964. Each member of Danny's family is occupied with a dream of their own: Danny wants a dog, his brother Beau wants to be an astronaut, his mother wants to be an author and his father dreams of keeping his family safe in a post–Vietnam War era. When Beau suddenly dies, their lives are shattered. And then a mysterious dog appears and "adopts" Danny. Danny comes to believe the dog is his brother — and he must make Beau's dreams come true. Gemini Summer won the 2007 Governor General's Literary Award for young people's literature.
Gemini Summer is for readers ages 11 and up.
From the book
The dog fell asleep. But the blond-haired boy lay awake, staring at the bars and the bricks. "We gotta keep going," he told the sleeping dog. "'Cause we can't go back. That's the thing — we can't ever go home again."
He looked at the lightbulb on the ceiling. Then he squinted and tried to imagine that it was the sun, and that he was lying outside on the grass with his dog. He thought about his home.
