Calgary's newest high school readies to open

Nelson Mandela High will have the only aviation program of its kind in Alberta
Calgary's newest high school is expected to make life and learning easier for students and families living in the northeast.
A sneak peek of Nelson Mandela High School in the community of Saddleridge was offered Tuesday.
When it opens its doors next week it will welcome almost 1,200 enrolled students, but it has space for 1,800 students.
"It's going to make a huge difference. I can walk to school much faster than waiting for the bus," said student Amisha Kumar, who says the school will alleviate stress for her parents as she travels from nearby Taradale.
The school's intake also covers Martindale, Falconridge, Castleridge and Coral Springs.
"It really is an exciting time," said principal Teresa Martin. "There are so many unique features."
The school is equipped with facilities for a culinary program, pre-engineering, robotics and fashion studies among others.
Parts of the school are still under construction — the province's first aviation program is months away from launching, and the school gym will be ready in the spring. Students will use the nearby Genesis Centre in the meantime.
