Elbow River near Stampede grounds not safe for swimming or wading, say health officials

Alberta Health Services says there are elevated levels of fecal coliforms

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has issued a warning about contamination in the Elbow River between 25 Ave. S.W. and 9 Ave. S.E., after routine tests found fecal coliforms in the water.
It advises people not to swim or wade in the water there, and that the untreated water is dangerous to drink.
AHS says fecal coliforms can cause vomiting or diarrhea if swallowed.
And it can cause skin, ear and eye infections from contact with the water.
AHS says it will post signs along the river and continue to monitor the water.
