One professor at the University of Calgary earned $737,422.21 in total pay last year, according to a salary disclosure released Thursday under new provincial law.

Steven Bryant, described by the university as "a world-leading nanotechnology researcher," earned $705,866.56 in basic compensation and $31,555.65 in "other" compensation in 2015, according to the list.

That puts him first on the list, ahead of university president Elizabeth Cannon, who earned $626,019.71.

In third place on the list is professor Jack Mintz with the U of C's School of Public Policy, who made $481.793.06 last year.

Alberta's new Public Sector Compensation Transparency Act, adopted in 2015, applies to all public sector agencies, boards and commissions governed by the Alberta Public Agencies Governance Act.

By law, the University of Calgary must now disclose the name, position, compensation, non-monetary benefits and severance for all employees who earned more than $125,000, in total, in 2015.

The "other" compensation disclosed in the list includes employer-paid benefits for supplemental health, dental, employee/family assistance programs, long-term disability, pension and workers compensation, according to the university. This includes the employer's portion of Canada Pension Plan and EI Employment Insurance contributions.

Employer pension contributions that are included in these benefits don't count toward the the $125,000 threshold calculation.
