2017 Canada Summer Games mascot unveiled at Winnipeg school

Kindergarten to Grade 8 youth from Manitoba, Northern Ontario invited to participate in naming contest
A magical creature created by the summer heat was unveiled as the mascot for the 2017 Canada Summer Games at Dufferin School in Winnipeg on Wednesday morning.
More than 250 students got the first look at the mascot, a yellow and orange character that gets its strength from the scorching sun, Games organizers said.
"The mascot is a really import part of our community relations program for the Games," said Martin Lussier, a spokesperson for the Games.
"Like today, the mascot will visit schools throughout the province over the next year, as well as be at a number of community events and festivals."
Winnipeg will host the 2017 Canada Summer Games from July 28 until August 13. The mascot unveiling was part of the kickoff campaign leading up to the Games.

Its design was inspired by Manitoba's culture and climate and the creature is said to live in the Spirit Sands desert. Summer is its favourite season.
The flames on the mascot's body are meant to represent the Canada Games cauldron and show unity in sport.
Students from kindergarten to Grade 8 living in Manitoba and Kenora, Ont., are invited to take part in a naming contest.
Organizers for the Games said more than 450 classes have already registered to take part in the challenge. The contest is open until May 27.
The finalists will be announced on June 1. People of all ages will then be able to vote online for their favourite name until June 6. The mascot's name will be revealed on June 9.
The 2017 Games will mark the 50th anniversary of the Canada Summer Games.
