The company proposing to develop a new gold mine near Geraldton, Ont., says it's moving forward with paperwork and permits — although actual mining is still years away.
Greenstone Gold Mine's Hardrock Project — a joint venture partnership between Centerra Gold Inc. and Premier Gold Mines Ltd.(external link) — recently held open houses to gather public comment as part of its environmental assessment.
The company's director of environment and community relations said construction could start within two years.
"The whole process, though, still hinges on getting through the environmental assessment," Ian Horne said.
"So, there's still a fair bit of uncertainty out there. But, I think in general, we in the mining business are extremely optimistic."
The single biggest issue remaining is the relocation of Highway 11, Horne noted. The current road runs through the middle of the proposed open pit.
