Const. Wynn wanted to be buried at Depot division where he was trained, widow says
Const. David Wynn was posted to Alberta and previously lived in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia — but it's Saskatchewan that will be the final resting place for the Mountie who was fatally shot in January.
The constable's family will be in Regina on Sunday for the RCMP's annual national memorial service that honours members, special constables, auxiliary constables and civilian members who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
In particular, the service honours those who faced a life-threatening risk. Wynn died Jan. 21, 2015 after being shot by a suspect while attempting to arrest him at a casino outside of Edmonton.
His widow, Shelly MacInnis Wynn, said it will be Regina, where the RCMP Training Academy is located, where her husband will finally be laid to rest.
"This is the place where he wanted to be buried and where he gave his all to become an officer and live his dream," she said in a Facebook post.
"I'm so proud of everything he did and all the lives he touched in some way. He will always be in our hearts and that laugh will always make us smile."
Wynn's name has been added to the Cenotaph, the RCMP Honour Roll, and the Memorial Wall.
The memorial parade and chapel service will be held Sunday morning at the RCMP Depot division grounds.
Also being remembered at the ceremony is Cpl. George Ronald Hawkins, who died June 6, 1968 of encephalitis.
He contracted the illness after a tick bit him while he was on duty tracking a suspect in the Turtle Mountains of southwest Manitoba.
The RCMP says Wynn and Hawkins bring the total number of fallen members to 236, since the North West Mounted Police began in 1873.
