Police have a man in his 20s in custody.
One man is dead after a daytime shooting in northeast Calgary Sunday afternoon.
According to police, at around 2:10 p.m. MT, officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 2600 block of Edmonton Trail N.E.
Serge Varin, who says he just moved into the neighbourhood yesterday, heard five gunshots and came out of his garage and saw a man on the ground.
EMS said emergency crews transported a man in critical life-threatening condition to Foothills Hospital. He later succumbed to his injuries.
Several police units flooded the area following the shooting. Witnesses gave police a description of the suspect — a male in a black parka in a white cap who fled the scene on foot. A man fitting that description spotted several blocks away by the HAWC flight crew, who directed police on the ground.
A man in his 20s was taken into custody in a field east of the crime scene.
Duty Insp. Joel Matthews says police have more than 10 witnesses to the shooting and are "optimistic" they have the right person in custody.
The homicide unit is investigating. Matthews says there is nothing to indicate this was a random attack and is not thought to be gang-related at this point.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
