Alberta premier Ralph Klein says he has decided to cut back on his drinking after a shouting match he had last week with some people in a homeless shelter.

Klein stopped at the Herb Jamieson Centre in downtown Edmonton after attending a public memorial for the late broadcaster Ed Whalen.

Klein admitted to reporters in Calgary Monday night that sometimes he drinks too much. He also said that he has resolved to curb his drinking.

"It's time. I'm 59 years old. I've got quite a ways to go in my mandate, so I'm going to curb and control what I see as a problem," said Klein.

He says he hasn't had a drink since Friday and is refreshed with his first few days of sobriety.

"I"ll tell you it feels good not to wake up with a hangover," said Klein.

Klein does not plan to seek professional help, but plans to look for support from his friends, family and caucus.

He also told reporters he doesn't believe drinking alcohol has affected his duties as premier.
