A former Miscouche, Prince Edward Island man convicted of killing his wife 12 years ago in Newfoundland is now free. On Saturday, a jury in the latest trial of Ronald Dalton found him not guilty of the crime.
Dalton was convicted of murdering his wife Brenda in 1989. The Crown argued Dalton smothered or strangled his wife. Dalton maintained she choked to death on cereal.
In 1998, Newfoundland's Court of Appeal ordered a new trial. On Saturday, jurors in that trial sided with Dalton. The PEI native said he's always known he was innocent, but said "it's nice to have everybody know that."
Dalton is asking for a public inquiry into his conviction, adding that in Newfoundland "there have been a number" of wrongful convictions. He was planning to return to Prince Edward Island on Sunday. There's no word whether the Crown will appeal.
