Hunter Tootoo comfortable with decision not to run

Long-serving MLA won't seek seat in Nunavut election

The longest sitting member of Nunavut's Legislative Assembly says he is at peace with his decision not to seek re-election.
Hunter Tootoo was first elected in 1999, in the inaugural election after Nunavut split from the Northwest Territories.
He was easily re-elected to two more terms in 2004 and 2008, representing Iqaluit Centre. Tootoo was known for his vocal criticism of the government as a regular MLA.
He was then named to Cabinet in 2008 and held several portfolios including Education Minister.
Tootoo left cabinet in May 2011 to become Speaker of the house.
He says he has no immediate plans for the future, but he's not ruling out a return to politics some day.
"There's quite a few people are disappointed but I just, I'm sorry, I need to take a break. Whether it's two years, five years, four years or whatever, I said I need a break," he said.
