America’s great fortunes were amassed on the backs of slaves. Webster and Cheikh visit a former Virginia plantation that had once belonged to James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States. Monroe had owned some 250 Black slaves. The pair meets Sara Bon-Harper, manager of the James Monroe Highland Estate, and Jennifer Stacey, a descendant of the former U.S. president and a slave. Cheikh is overwhelmed by this visit marked by heartrending tales, shattered families, and strong emotions.
