Treat yo self this Valentine's Day (and other self care tips)

If you (like me) are newly (and happily) out of a relationship, and/or simply excited to be independent and single, you may not think Valentine's Day is for you. But if Valentine's Day is about taking a moment to celebrate an important relationship, ask yourself, what have you done for you lately? I'm talking about self care, and nurturing the the most important relationship you have — the one have with yourself.

With that in mind, here are 7 ideas for how you can indulge in a little self care this Valentine's Day.

Get sweaty

What makes you feel really, really good? Is it yoga, running, spinning, barre class? Whatever you decide, pick an activity and go get sweaty. Exercise is one of the best ways to increase the brain's serotonin levels, so you're guaranteed to feel great after. Grab some friends if you want, and make a date out of it.

Treat yo self

Treat yourself to something you love, just because. Whether it's a pretty new dress you've been eying for weeks, a cool Korean sheet mask, a day at the spa, or that new fragrance you've been lusting after, go for it! Dedicate some time (and money, if you want) to yourself, because you totally deserve it.

Add a pop of colour to your pout

Studies have shown that wearing bright lipstick can actually enhance your mood, so why not brighten up your day while adding a red pop to your pout? The same goes for clothing. If you (like me) live in monochromatic grayscale, try switching it up. Bright colours are scientifically proven to help boost the mood, and chances are, you probably look smokin' in red, too.

Cook something delicious for yourself

Take the time to make yourself something delicious. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, but do try to choose something relatively healthy that you're excited about eating. Taking time to make something great for yourself will make you feel good, and will help you unwind. Invite some friends over to you too, if you like, and make it a party.

Buy flowers for your friends

Platonic friendships qualify as loving relationships, too, and may, in fact, be more long-lasting and important than any of your romantic relationships. So worth celebrating! Buy your nearest and dearest flowers (or a card, or treat them to pizza), and let them know how wonderful they are, and how much they mean to you.

Take the night off

No, we mean really take the night off. Turn off the sound notifications on your phone for a night, forget about Tinder, and give Facebook and Instagram a rest. Experience the joy of putting those things on "do not disturb" and focus on yourself. It really is a luxury. Bonus: you will miss all of the obnoxious Valentine's Day posts from people you don't even really like that much anyways — you can thank me later.

Catch up on sleep

Make a point to call the night a little earlier and commit to getting 8 hours of sleep. A good night's sleep can help improve energy, clarity, and overall, actually helps make you happier. This is truly one of the best V-Day gifts you can give to yourself.
