Have eclipse FOMO? Prep for totality in Eastern Canada in 2024
Eclipse mania is over. But not for long.
As the sun finally sets on yesterday's eclipse mania, you're either basking in the smug glow that you witnessed its full celestial glory safely with "space goggles" and a homemade pinhole box viewer or you're feeling the sharp pang of cosmic FOMO that you missed the uncommon crossing of two heavenly bodies entirely. If you find yourself among the latter, take solace that another eclipse is actually just around the corner, in astronomical terms.
On April 8, 2024 the sun and moon will again cut a swath of fevered excitement and awe across North America. This time their symbiotic trajectory will make the total eclipse visible from south to north in an easterly-moving arc finishing its North American journey in Eastern Canada.
Seven short years from now, major cities in the path of complete totality beneath the next total solar eclipse will include Fredericton, Kingston, Cornwall and Montreal. Open house eclipse party at my place. Message me on Twitter for deets.
The next eclipse could prove to be even more captivating than yesterday's as the moon will block out the sun for twice as long. A full six minutes of totality.
Even the least keen of sour pusses must admit that the eclipse is something of a cosmic exception and worth a cautious glance upwards with some trusty space glasses on (make sure they' certified safe and definitely don't MacGyver a bunch of regular sunglasses together like a dolt). *hides three pairs of glasses duct taped together* So make your way to eastern Canada for spring 2024 and catch the cosmic dance you missed. Or catch it again if you're greedy like that.
Note: If you find yourself in the group of folks that stole a half-second glance because human curiosity caught you unprepared and are worried about your retina, examine some of the potential consequences here. Experts say more than a quarter second glance is asking for eye trouble. So come prepared if you really want to soak in space's next magic trick.
